Strawberries & Curd

I’m back, after a break – for field work in the east, and other random office stuff.
But lots of new dishes are being planned, made and tasted, even as you read this, by the little and not so little critters who live on, and near the bar-counter top, in the Elibank Road apartment.

Today, I had fun with Strawberries.

Well Strawberries and Cream is a well known favorite, right – so I thought to try it with fresh buffalo curd, instead.

I diced 1 cup of strawberries, added ¾ cup of vodka, a pinch of salt and reduced it, until it was thick, adding about 2 table-spoons of sugar, and a few drops of white vinegar while it bubbled. I poured this into the bottom of the wine glasses, then liquidized the curd in a blender, adding that over the strawberry reduction, which was pulpy, since it was not strained, by not googy, and then let it cool in the fridge. After lunch, I topped it off with thinly sliced fresh strawberries dipped in the reduction.
The curd turns out well formed, and divides up the differently textured strawberries with its slightly sour, creamy froth. Yummy poo!

Wow! It looks absolutely scrummy. Did you add more sugar to the curd mix, or was the ammount added to the strawberry reduction enough to counteract the sourness of both the fruit and the curd?

yeah, really good question -- i worried about this when i was fixing it. i didn't add sugar to the curd, and it turned out fine -- even with super-market curd. if you get real, fresh mee-kiri from tissa, it would be even better (unsweetened), i think.

yes, so the sugar in the reduction was enough. you can sorta mix it up as you eat it also, but i like to anticipate sweetness, so i didn't :)

this looks absolutely delicious and i forwarded it to my friend in matara. when i was in sri lanka, though, strawberries were nowhere to be found. am i correct in assuming that they can be bought in colombo supermarkets?

yes, strawberries, from the hills can be got in 250g packs at Foodcity, for one -- which is not just in Colombo, its a major supermarket chain, that's in lots of towns.

to be honest that combination did make me cringe a bit when I thought about it...but then that maybe because I don't particularly fancy strawberries. If it does taste as good as it looks then I might be swayed:)

Elibank road eh? I live just there as well...well when I'm in the motherland that is...

Looks completely scrumptious! Can't wait to try this out. By cute coincidence, the word verification needed for this comment reads "fruitv".

looks yummy. and everytime I visit your blog, I leave feeling extremely hungry. I have a strong suspicion that these food blogs are partly to blame for my never ending battle of the bulge.
